A Coup of Tea is Now Available! https://caseyblair.com/a-coup-of-tea-is-now-available/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=a-coup-of-tea-is-now-available Tue, 02 Aug 2022 09:12:00 +0000 https://caseyblair.com/?p=1372 Today is the release day for A Coup of Tea!

The book is now available in ebook and paperback wherever books are sold, and you can also request it from your library.

Cover of A COUP OF TEA (Tea Princess Chronicles Book 1) by Casey Blair, featuring purple teapot with magical blue swirls in front of cozy fireplace.
Cover of TEA SET AND MATCH (Tea Princess Chronicles Book 2) by Casey Blair, featuring green teapot with green swirls of magic.
Cover of ROYAL TEA SERVICE (Tea Princess Chronicles Book 3) by Casey Blair, featuring blue teapot with golden swirls of magic in front of backdrop with art of dragon figures.

This is the first book of the Tea Princess Chronicles, a cozy fantasy series originally written as a web serial. After many, many reader requests, last year I Kickstarted this project to turn the whole thing into books.

The Kickstarter funded in barely over an hour, and ultimately it funded TEN TIMES OVER. By any metric, it was a wild success.

It has been quite a ride from when I first conceived of this project in 2016 (!!) to bring us here. But I’m delighted to say by the end of the month, my first complete trilogy will be available to readers everywhere. I hope it brings you even a fraction of the joy it’s brought me over the years.

A COUP OF TEA

TEA PRINCESS CHRONICLES BOOK 1

Cover of A COUP OF TEA (Tea Princess Chronicles Book 1) by Casey Blair, featuring purple teapot with magical blue swirls in front of cozy fireplace.

When the fourth princess of Istalam is due to dedicate herself to a path serving the crown, she makes a choice that shocks everyone, herself most of all: She leaves.

In hiding and exiled from power, Miyara finds her place running a tea shop in a struggling community that sits on the edge of a magical disaster zone. But there’s more brewing under the surface of this city—hidden magic, and hidden machinations—that threaten all the people who’ve helped her make her own way.

Miyara may not be a princess anymore, but with a teapot in hand she’ll risk her newfound freedom to discover a more meaningful kind of power.

A Coup of Tea is the first book of the Tea Princess Chronicles, a cozy fantasy series full of magic tea, friendship, and lifting people up even when the odds seem impossible.

Tea Princess Chronicles Kickstarter Launched! https://caseyblair.com/tea-princess-chronicles-kickstarter-launched/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=tea-princess-chronicles-kickstarter-launched Mon, 18 Oct 2021 18:47:34 +0000 https://caseyblair.com/?p=1310
Tea Princess Chronicles promo banner.

I’m thrilled to announce I’ve launched a Kickstarter to turn my cozy fantasy series Tea Princess Chronicles into official books!

The most common question I got asked the whole time I was writing was whether I could make the books available for people to purchase. So I am doing the thing!

The thing about self-publishing though is there are a lot of up-front costs. The Kickstarter is intended to defray the biggest of these (namely cover design).

The Kickstarter has options to get the ebook of Book 1 in time for Christmas–months before the official publication–the paperbacks signed either with baby tea dragon bookplates or stamps, stickers, and more!

Every contribution helps, including spreading the word, so I hope you’ll take a look. <3

Consider the Dust on Sale! https://caseyblair.com/consider-the-dust-on-sale/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=consider-the-dust-on-sale Thu, 03 Jun 2021 04:17:23 +0000 https://caseyblair.com/?p=1292 Consider the Dust is once again available on all ebook retailers, and more than that, it’s on sale for just 99 cents through the end of June! ?

Publishing this novella was one of the highlights of my 2020 in an extremely difficult time, and I wanted to celebrate its anniversary with you. So if you haven’t checked it out yet, now’s a great time!

Graphic with CONSIDER THE DUST cover, sale price, UBL, and pitch: "In a world where a select few obtain godlike combat powers, one woman is going to shatter the universe..."

About Consider the Dust

In a world where a select few obtain godlike combat powers, one woman is going to shatter the universe.

The empress of the celestial palace has been omnipotent for centuries, but Kiran has a mysterious magic weapon and a plan to overthrow her, today—or so she claims.

Mai has her own magic blade, doesn’t trust Kiran as deeply as she can stab her with it, and is very, very good at stabbing. Not even Kiran can hope to stand against her anymore—or so she thinks.

Two lifelong rivals, or best friends. Definitely one of those.

One chance to change everything, or lose everything, forever.

Consider the Dust is a stand-alone novella and an epic adventure about the power of legends, hope, and fighting for your beliefs with everything you have.

And a brief and unrelated footnote: Those of you who follow the Tea Princess Chronicles Twitter account may have noticed that over the weekend I published a new Tea Princess Chronicles novelette! Currently “Saiyana’s Challenge” is only unlocked for Patreon backers, but I will let you know when it becomes publicly available.

So never fear, everyone will be able to read it! And until then you have time to catch up on Royal Tea Service and the bonus scene from Saiyana’s perspective in preparation, because in this story spoilers abound.

4th Street Fantasy Podcasts https://caseyblair.com/4th-street-fantasy-podcasts/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=4th-street-fantasy-podcasts Wed, 05 Aug 2020 10:26:00 +0000 https://caseyblair.com/?p=1263 I’m the Programming Director for 4th Street Fantasy, and since we couldn’t physically hold the conference this year I put together a mini-slate of panel-style podcasts instead!

They’re FREE FOR EVERYONE, so download away for a taste of what programming at 4th Street is like!

I’m really proud of how they all came out, and I had fun throwing challenging questions at the brilliant hapless panelists toward the end of the podcasts on the role of hospitality in stories, systems of communication, and making art while the world burns.

I’m also a panelist on the podcast about meal gatherings in fantasy, along with Elizabeth Bear, DongWon Song, Fonda Lee, and Ruthanna Emrys!

Here’s the description of what we talked about:

4th Street Fantasy logo.

The Fantasy Feast

Meal gatherings are a prominent feature in fantasy. It’s not just the geographical availability of the food that details our worlds, but how characters interact with food and what it says about them. Whether characters’ staple foods are rice or bread, for instance, or if they have access to both, there’s still a choice of what to serve. A character who has more difficulty acquiring meat but nevertheless serves it to guests—or doesn’t—tells us something; likewise a character who can barely afford their own rice but still shares it.

A meal gathering is about the food, but it’s also about more than that: narratively, we can use meals to manipulate tension, build atmosphere, and create social frameworks that underpin our stories. Familiar mealtime customs and ways of interacting with food can work as anchors for the reader, while unfamiliar ones can make an experience as universal as sharing a meal feel alien. Fantasy has a particular reputation for devoting time to depicting not just food, but meals: let’s tease out why.

Ambitious Women Characters in SFF https://caseyblair.com/ambitious-women-characters-in-sff/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=ambitious-women-characters-in-sff Sat, 01 Aug 2020 17:08:32 +0000 https://caseyblair.com/?p=1257 For my Sirens faculty interview, Faye Bi started out by asking me, “If you had to describe your “reading profile” to a stranger (or to a bookseller, librarian, or other gatekeeper), what would you list as some of your favorite themes, subgenres, or tropes in fantasy literature? What makes a “Casey book”?”

This, my friends, is called being set up. ?

Women in SFF Who Dream Big Dreams
and Don’t Let Anyone Stop Them

Collage of book covers of titles listed in link.

Surprising exactly no one, I duly erupted a book list full of some of my favorite ambitious women characters in SFF. My recommendations of books by mainly women authors is now up, titled “Women in SFF Who Dream Big Dreams and Don’t Let Anyone Stop Them.”

That’s my brand in a nutshell.

Here’s the more detailed explanation of what I actually answered in the interview: the kinds of stories I want to read, and to write.

These days the story features grabbing me most are ambition, irreverence, and radical compassion. Often in combination: There’s nothing quite as satisfying to me as a woman who doesn’t hesitate to dare to give the finger to anyone who would keep her down, who lifts up others as she rises, who understands from the start that she’s valuable, and who is unabashedly competent—as well as inspiring—by virtue of existing without shame in the world we live in and taking up narrative space.

You can probably tell by how I frame that that what I personally look for in any books are excellent characters—not necessarily likable, but depicted in nuanced and interesting ways. I’ll forgive silly plot holes and unrealistic world-building if I care about the characters’ journeys. The specific tropes I respond to are necessarily informed by how they have worked or failed for me in media I’ve consumed historically, and over the years my fantasy tastes have broadly morphed from “whatever shounen anime and epic fantasy I can find” to “shadowy worlds and darkness are Cool” to “holy shit The Goblin Emperor.” They’re all part of me: A shounen-passion-style protagonist who triumphs in spite of all odds through sheer determination is always going to speak to me; I’m a sucker for dark lords and secret guilds of assassins; and a character who can bring people together toward difficult growth and actively reckons with oppressive legacies is inspiring.

Ultimately, a Casey book is fun to read, makes me think, and prominently features women characters owning their power. It’s hopeful without making light of real problems. If you have an action-packed story about a woman burning down the patriarchy with magic, I’m pretty much set.

You know what, I feel like you planned this, but now I have a book list for you: Women in SFF Who Dream Big Dreams and Don’t Let Anyone Stop Them. Those are Casey books.

Sirens Interview and Schedule https://caseyblair.com/sirens-interview-and-schedule/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=sirens-interview-and-schedule Sun, 26 Jul 2020 20:50:33 +0000 https://caseyblair.com/?p=1240 I suddenly have a whole bunch of news to share all at once! First up are some updates about Sirens Conference.

"Stories train readers, and we can use that--we can learn how to understand what a book is in fact doing, and we can learn to reach for and demand different kinds of stories."

I was invited to be a workshop instructor at this year’s Sirens Studio, and leading up to the conference they put together a really fantastic set of interview questions for me that were an utter delight to answer. I got to talk about dragons, books, lifting each other up while setting the patriarchy on fire—you know, my favorite things.

(I was very amused when the interviewer thanked me for answering everything in the nerdiest way possible. I’m not sure what else she expected from me, honestly. I have one mode, and it is Peak Nerd.)

In addition to the workshop, I’ll be doing some other programming during the main conference which will be announced later this year!

However, what was just announced is that this year’s Sirens has sadly but necessarily been postponed. The good news is I’m still scheduled to be guest faculty there! Just, next year.

Workshop description summary.

My workshop will be Yeet the Patriarchy: How Fantasy Stories Can Undermine Systemic Oppression, which you can read more about for next year!
